NEW YEAR, NEW YOU: HOME REFRESH 2024

If you’re someone who loves creating a “vibe” in their home and enjoys interior design inspo, then this blog is for you. In our final installment of our New Year, New You series, we’ve compiled a list of 2024 (and beyond) interior design trends that will help you get visually re-inspired and thinking about the which trends to add into your sanctuary this year.

Before and during the pandemic we saw many themes in interior trends: creamy colored walls, grays, whites, farmhouse, gold accents, and lots of mid-century influences. Though many of these looks are still relevant in today’s homes, there is a new crop of trends popping up everywhere that you can start incorporating into your living spaces. So, if you’re planning a full-scale remodel or just want to dip your toe into some of these new aesthetics, we are sharing tips and products that can help you achieve your next, new favorite looks that are all the rage.

All Shades of Brown

Bring on the Browns! From caramel to chocolate, terra-cotta, and beige, the brown trend is showing up everywhere in 2024. Consider adding a brown-toned accent wall in your home, add a rich brown blanket to your bedding, or add some new throws and pillows into the mix to achieve a richly warm, elevated look. Here are a few items to get you inspired:

Chaise with fluted legs from West Elm

Fluted details

If you watch HGTV, then you’ve seen the “fluted” trend appearing on many design shows. Everything from walls to accent furniture, we are seeing the fluted trend infiltrate spaces that wish to add texture and a modern flair. If you tend to lean more towards a contemporary or modern aesthetic, you should be able to easily integrate this feature into your home. All of these fluted items below are available to purchase online:

Metallics

Of all the trends that we’ve seen in the last several years, it seems like the the metallic element is here to stay. We will continue to see brass, iron, bronze, and chrome elements used in all types of home goods from lighting, hardware, mirrors and furniture. So consider adding some metal touches throughout your home if you haven’t already. You can either buy new pieces, vintage pieces, or even create your own with a little brass paint! But if you don’t have the time for DIY projects, there are plenty of choices online like the ones shown below:

Boucle

Upholstered boucle platform bed from Amazon

We started seeing the boucle trend a couple of years ago and we are so glad it is still going strong. Boucle fabric, reminiscent of the texture of sheeps wool, provides the quintessential “cozy” look and feel and is a great way to add softness to a room. So if you’re looking to add warmth to a room, boucle is the perfect solution. We typically see boucle fabrics used in nurseries, bedrooms, and living rooms that lean towards a modern, contemporary, or farmhouse, or transitional aesthetic. Here are some great examples to consider for your home.

Curves

Curved wood console from Wayfair

Curves, curves, and more curves. This prevalent trend is something that we’ve been seeing a lot of in the last year or so. This design trend can easily be incorporated into your home if you favor anything transitional, modern, or contemporary. The good news is that there is currently a wide variety of the options in the marketplace to choose from. Here are a few picks that we love.

Jewel Tones

Rich and Vibrant jewel tones used in a living room

Something that is a relatively new trend that we will be seeing more of in 2024 is the rise of the jewel tones. If you are someone who loves color, then add this one to the top of your home refresh list. Emerald greens, Sapphire blues, Yellow golds, and Vibrant pinks are being applied in design aesthetics that want to achieve vibrancy, color, and lots of personality. So if you favor bold design choices, love some glam, and relish the idea of more color, your trend has arrived.

Handcrafted Art

Whether you’ve created it yourself, or you’ve invested in a beautiful, hand-made piece of art, this trend is something you will be seeing more of going forward. Handcrafted items are the most special items to display in your home as they were most likely created by a family member, friend, or skilled artisan. Paintings, sculptures, carvings, baskets, and blankets are just a few ways to incorporate this design feature.

Bookshelf Wealth

Started on Tik Tok last year, “Bookshelf Wealth” is a look that features books and other personal treasures displayed on shelves.

If you or your family loves reading physical books, this is a look you can try pretty easily. Make a statement by displaying your personal collection of books, photo albums, pottery, and other bespoke items on a bookshelf in your living room or other common space. And if you don’t have a lot of books lying around, you don’t have to go out and buy new books. In fact, there are plenty of used bookstores on the internet (and most likely in your town) where you can purchase great, gently used books (at a nice discount). You can also try estate sales and thrift stores to find used books.

Romantic Themes

“Cottage-core” is a romantic design aesthetic that we will be seeing more of in 2024.

Also referred to as “cottage'-core”, romantic design themes have been making a comeback over the last couple of years. The romantic aesthetic includes floral patterns in wallpaper and bedding, cozy/chunky blankets, handmade items, old books, and antiques. This trend leans more towards a more rustic, arts & crafts feel so if you love farmhouse, traditional, or country themes, this may be the new design trend to try. This look would work well in a bedroom, living room, powder room, or nursery.

Antiques & Vintage

If you have family heirlooms, antique furniture, or anything vintage, definitely use this trend when designing your spaces. Achieving the right balance is key here. The best approach to adding vintage pieces is by layering the old with the new. To avoid looking like an antique store, you want to abide by somewhere between the 80:20 and 50:50 rule when adding in your vintage pieces. The great news is that antiques can blend well into any design style including mid-century, coastal, farmhouse, cottage, transitional, or traditional. And, this design look is 100% sustainable since your re-purposing older yet well-made items instead of buying more stuff you may not need. Here is some beautiful antique inspo below.

Burl Wood

Large rectangle coffe table from West Elm

Burl wood has been making a big comeback in the interior design world lately. Burl wood design originally started in the 1920’s and peaked in popularity in the 1970’s. Its natural imperfections are what make burl wood patterns so attractive and interesting, and every piece of burl wood has it’s own unique pattern, which is what makes each piece special. Consider adding a burl wood coffee table, console or desk in your next room design to add a pop of personality. Burl wood is truly beautiful and pairs very well with all design styles. `

As you can see, there are many new trends to consider for your next home refresh. Just remember, if you’re not 100% sold on a specific “look” yet, do everything in moderation first. Consider either choosing one room to completely revamp, or start with just a few changes here and there: some throw pillows, artwork, paint or wallpaper an accent wall, add a side table, a cool piece of artwork, or some new side chairs. This is a great way to try on the new “look” you like, slowly and steadily, without making major investments to your entire home.
